It seems to me that steel guitar is a perfect vehicle for free improvisation. One of the reasons for this, is that by its very nature, microtonal possibilities are included by design.

For traditionally scored music, the lack of tonal certainty presents a challenge; albeit one that is offset by the ability to slide, but for free improvisation and experimental music, the ability to have infinite tonal freedom is a huge benefit.
