OK... so why is someone who doesn't play bass posting in the Bass instrument forum?
Because, if I, as a flute, harmonica, and lap steel guitar player, had to choose just one other instrumentalist to collaborate with in a free form improvisation; it would definitely be a bass player! All the instruments that I play are, what could be described as "top heavy". Playing together with a bass, gives performances a bottom end, and nothing like a bass to hold down a rhythm... even if it's a polyrhythm or multi-rhythm!
Would love to hear from some bassists who are into the free jazz / free improvisations scene!
