My personal POV... Ukuleles are awesome little instruments!

A uke is as good as any other instrument for free improvisations, and even better in some ways. It's small and portable, and seems to naturally lend itself to experimentation. Alternate tunings, and detuning/retuning takes only a few moments. And portability means you can put one in a backpack, or in the back seat. With the variety of prices and qualities available, it's possible to buy one for $30, and destroy it in a performance art or noise piece. And, it's also possible to spend well over $1000 to buy a serious musical instrument, capable of keeping up with any other quality instrument for demanding precision work.
